AS Roma vs Real Madrid Preview: Mourinho Returns to Rome as the Giallorossi Prepare Their Trap
Real Madrid travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, October 14, for one of the most intriguing fixtures of the Champions League league phase.
The spotlight will inevitably fall on José Mourinho. The Real Madrid coach returns to Rome, where he previously enjoyed an emotional spell in charge of the Giallorossi. This time, however, he arrives as the opponent, leading a Madrid side determined to build on their 2-1 opening victory over Inter.
Mourinho Returns to Familiar Ground
Mourinho knows better than most how difficult the Olimpico can become on a European night. The atmosphere, intensity and pressure from the stands can quickly change the rhythm of a game.
Real Madrid will be expected to control possession, but they cannot afford a slow start. Roma will want to make the contest physical, disrupt Madrid’s passing and use the energy of the home crowd to create an uncomfortable evening for the visitors.
Mbappé Leads Madrid’s Threat
Kylian Mbappé remains the player Roma will fear most. His pace becomes especially dangerous when opponents push their defensive line forward, while Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde give Madrid additional quality between midfield and attack.
Madrid arrive after a narrow 1-0 league victory over Villarreal, a match that showed both their ability to grind out results and some of the problems Mourinho still needs to solve.
Vinicius Junior will also be one of the major talking points following his red card against Villarreal, although that domestic suspension does not automatically rule him out of Champions League action.
Roma Have Problems but Remain Dangerous
Gian Piero Gasperini will know Roma cannot simply defend around their own penalty area for the entire night. His side must choose their moments to press and attack the spaces Madrid leave behind.
Roma do have an important concern in goal, with Mile Svilar sidelined through injury and Pierluigi Gollini expected to step in. Against an attack containing players of Madrid’s quality, that will place even more responsibility on the home defence.
A Potential Trap for Real Madrid
On paper, Real Madrid have the stronger squad. In Rome, however, games are rarely decided on paper.
If Madrid control the tempo and create space for Mbappé, they should have opportunities. But if Roma turn the match into a tense, aggressive battle, Mourinho’s return could become far more complicated than expected.
Real Madrid arrive in the Eternal City looking for a second Champions League victory, while Roma will see a famous home win as the perfect way to ignite their European campaign.
